Steve Bird’s love for music dates back to the first record he ever bought, Maggie May by Rod Stewart and he fondly remembers sneaking a transistor radio into his primary school so he could listen to Radio 1 during morning break and lunchtime. He also remembers looking forward to Top of the Pops on a Thursday night with a cassette tape recorder to hand and a fresh new blank C90 cassette! ‘It was high-tech in those days’ says Steve.
He served his DJ apprenticeship with almost 40 years on the double decks as a mobile DJ, entertaining guests at wedding receptions and birthday parties with his Sound Wave Disco. He then became involved with Central Sussex Radio as a presenter and as part of the team involved in making the application to OFCOM for a broadcast licence. He’s also presented shows on Bright FM (now More FM) and Mid Downs Hospital Radio.
Steve is Programme Manager at Burgess Hill Radio and also presents the Breakfast Show on weekday mornings. He is responsible for the overall ‘sound’ of the radio station and spends a lot of time maintaining our music library, scheduling the music and helping our volunteer presenters with their shows.
Steve’s days are pretty busy but when he has some time off he enjoys sailing, skiing and watching football from top level to grass roots.
Steve is married with one son and two daughters and lives in Burgess Hill.
